CATARACT

Cataract is the cloudiness of the normally clear lens in the eye. It prevents the lens from focusing light onto the retina and hence causes blurring of vision and leads to vision impairment. As the cataract advances, this haziness of vision increases over a period of time. The symptoms of cataract are variable, as it can develop in different ways. Most people notice a gradual deterioration in their vision. Objects may begin to look yellow, hazy, blurred or distorted. Greater light may be required to see clearly or glares or haloes from light may be experienced at night. A common problem encountered is increasing nearsightedness or frequent change in their glass power.

TYPES OF CATARACTS

INCREASING AGE

Age is a primary reason for cataracts. About half the population by the age of 60 has cataracts while around 80 percent of people have a cataract in at least one eye by the age of 70 years.

TRAUMATIC CATARACT

A direct injury or trauma can cause damage to the eye leading to cataracts. It can be progressive or instantly after a trauma.

SYMPTOMS OF CATARACT

A cataract is a progressive condition and as it is age-related, people mistake it for aging symptoms. It is painless and causes blurriness in vision to various degrees. The degree of symptoms can be very mild to as extreme as it may cause problems in doing everyday tasks.

  • 2. Problems with night vision
  • 3. Glares and flashes at night while driving and other normal activities
